• the product of the force and the distance from the point to the force vector

Expressed mathematically:

where

M = moment of the force (Nm)

F = the applied force (N)

a = the moment arm (m)

The Law of Lever is a torque balance on a stationary object and can be expressed as

where

L = distance from the point (1 or 2) to the force vector (m, ft)

or

T₁ = T₂ (1c)

where

T = torque or moment (Nm, lb_fft)
