Solubility

Measure of the maximum amount of a solute that can be dissolved in a solvent

Solubility is a measure of the maximum amount of a solute that can be dissolved in 0.1 kg of a solvent at a given temperature.

  • solubility is dependent on temperature. In general, but not without expectations, solubility increases with temperature
  • smaller particles dissolves faster than larger particles
  • a solid dissolves faster if the mixture is stirred or shaken

Examples

  • tea with sugar - a solution of sugar and hot water (tea)
  • seawater - a solution of salt and water

If 56 gram salt is dissolved in 0.8 kg water -  56 / 8 = 7 gram  is dissolved in 0.1 kg water. The percentage solubility can be calculated as

(7 g/0.1kg) (10 0.1kg/kg) / (1000 g/kg) 100%

    = 7 %
